Farmers Markets, Community Supported Agriculture (CSAs), U-Pick Farms and Orchards

Life in Southern Oregon means access to an extraordinary abundance of produce that is healthy, locally grown, perfectly ripe and in season. Local farmers markets are wonderful community events where you can buy the freshest produce and meet the growers. Many farms offer Community Supported Agriculture programs that provide subscribers with a box of fresh, seasonal produce every week. And many locals enjoy picking produce themselves at local U-Pick farms and orchards. Bring a friend and enjoy the fresh air and exercise while picking fruit right off the tree or vine.

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA’s)

Community Supported Agriculture programs (or CSA’s) are a wonderful way to eat delicious, sustainably-raised food that is locally grown. The idea behind CSA’s is a simple one: you “subscribe” to a local farm by purchasing a share in that farm’s crops for the year. Your subscription entitles you to a weekly box of fresh, seasonal produce during your farm’s growing season — generally somewhere between 20 and 28 weeks.

Membership in a CSA brings the satisfaction of knowing the people who grow your food. It’s a wonderful feeling to look at a meal you’ve prepared and know exactly where all of its ingredients were grown.

The Local Dish website lists about 20 CSAs in Southern Oregon, and new ones are sprouting up all the time. Take some time this summer to get to know a few of your local farmers—and maybe even tour their farms.

In this case, The Farming Fish breeds tilapia on the property, feeding the fish lettuce and green waste from the gardens.
